Health & Safety

In accordance with Virginia administrative code, the child cannot be at Nurturing Young Minds and parents will need to make pick up arrangements when called if he has:

  • A temperature over 101°F;
  • Recurrent vomiting or diarrhea; or
  • A communicable disease.

Children showing symptoms of mild illness can be at Rainbow Junction as long as they are able to fully participate in our activities and not expose other children to the illness.   Our goal is to protect the health of all children through healthful care and protect the safety of all children through adequate supervision which we cannot do when tending to ill children.  If we call you with news of an ill child, or refuse your child for care because of symptoms, parents may take the child to the doctor and have the doctor document with a note to the Center that the child is not ill, not contagious, and is able to participate in activities at the Center.

See the Parent Handbook for more information regarding health issues.

FOR THE PROTECTION OF YOUR CHILD AND OTHER CHILDREN, PLEASE DO NOT BRING YOUR CHILD TO THE CENTER IF ANY OF THE FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS DEVELOPED IN THE PAST 12 HOURS:

  • Fever of 100 degrees or more in infants and over 101 for pre-school and school age
  • Staph, or strep infection under treatment less than 24 hours
  • Any type of unknown or infectious rash
  • Chicken pox, measles, mumps
  • Vomiting more than 2 times
  • Head Lice or scabies
  • Diarrhea more than 2 times
  • Pinworm
  • Severe cough (croup)
  • Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) under treatment for less than 24 hours.  Children on antibiotics may be brought in the morning following the 24 hour treatment period if no other symptoms are present.

A CHILD WITH ANY OF THE ABOVE INDICATIONS MAY BE BROUGHT TO THE OFFICE FOR ISOLATION AND THE PARENT NOTIFIED.  PARENTS MAY BE REQUIRED TO ARRANGE FOR THE CHILD TO BE TAKEN HOME FROM THE CENTER.  A CHILD WHO IS UNABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN PROGRAM ACTIVITIES DUE TO NOT FEELING WELl, BUT NOT SHOWING ANY SEVERE SYMPTOMS MAY BE BROUGHT TO THE OFFICE FOR AN ISOLATED REST.  THE PARENT WILL BE NOTIFIED IF STAFF FEEL THE CHILD WOULD BE MORE COMFORTABLE AT HOME.

If the staff feel it is appropriate for your child's temperature to be taken at the Center, you may be notified. Temperatures are taken across the forehead, behind the ear or under the arm with a digital thermometer.

During times of severe illness, the Center may institute specific temporary guidelines due to symptoms in order to contain the spread of that illness and protect the health of the children, parents and staff.
